WHITE RIBBON ALLIANCE
The White Ribbon Alliance is the world's largest network of organisations dedicated to ending the needless of deaths of women in pregnancy and childbirth. The international coalition spans over 100 countries and includes a huge range of members and supporters. The UK Prime Minister's wife Sarah Brown is a patron and Naomi Campbell was named their Global Ambassador at a ceremony in LA in April 2009. Pregnancy is the leading killer of women of reproductive age in the developing world and over 80% of these deaths are totally preventable. It remains a little known scandal that the number of women dying worldwide has not gone down for 20 years. The ramifications of these needless deaths are huge, both in social and economic terms. When a mother dies the newborn baby often dies as a result and those family members left behind are often forced further into poverty. When a mother dies, children (usually the girls) are taken out of education and are therefore more likely to grow up in poverty themselves and in turn are less able to educate their own children - and so the vicious circle continues. Naomi is committed to her role as the WRA Global Ambassador and will continue to campaign to help save the lives of women and babies all over the word. Naomi hosted her Fashion For Relief™ show in 2008 with Sarah Brown, in aid of the WRA, the event was a huge success raising thousands for charity and awareness for the cause. She is hosting the show once again in London, February 18th in aid of the WRA as it advocates for the health needs and rights of women and girls around the world, especially supporting its partners in Haiti at this time to rebuild the healthcare system for mothers and babies.
